Diffusion Profusion.
Designers and mass retailers cannot seem to get enough of diffusion lines these days. Everyone is doing lines "for" everyone. I feel like... I might be a little sick of it? Now, don't get me wrong here- I stood in line in front of a H&M in Germany to get first crack at Karl Lagerfeld's line. I fought with a mother who had a baby strapped to her chest for a Stella McCartney sweater at H&M. I woke up early to catch a bus only to check out Rogan's Target line. I bought a dress/top thing from Hawks, the Geren Ford for Urban Outfitters collection. I love my Stella blazer, my Victor & Rolf sweatshirt, my Cavalli dress... all earned on the violent floors of H&M during opening morning.
And yet, it seems, enough already. Quality is going down, lines are getting lost in translation, designers are lowering expectations for a lot of exposure and a little bit if cash. Some make sense- Luella did a wonderful line in basic fabrics and cuts for Target. Kate Moss has turned her line for TopShop into a gold mine after wearing their clothes for years. Some don't- Alice + Olivia for Payless look just like Payless shoes with a logo slapped on. Vera Wang at Kohl's has sold poorly, blame being put on the shoddy quality of the pieces.
And Botkier for Target? Forgive me if I think these all look very Guess by Marciano. Luxe leathers and handcrafted design does not do well in the Target price point. These go on sale July 21st.

On the other hand, Gryson for Target really worked for me. Shiny patent took the edge of the cheap fabric and woven strips added interest and style. I kept my eye on this tote bag for ages, it is finally on sale at Target.com for $25.99.

Target's Go International has been hit or miss since it's inception, and always a miss when left to it's in house designers. The concept seems to keep the series producing lines and when a designer is not lined up, just have their own designers whip up something they saw on the runway. This is what is in stores now, boring and uninspired.

I don't think the Richard Chai collection for Target is that much more exciting. It drops August 3rd and consists of a bunch of seemingly random items thrown together to make even the cool stuff look frumpy. I like the two purple dresses, though. Would make the trip for that.

The collaboration that I will actually wake up at dawn, stand in line, and get a little bruised for? Comme des Garcons at H&M. Nothing has leaked yet about the collection itself but anything Rei Kawakubo does is bound to be amazing. An incredibly experimental and innovative designer, Kawakubo has talked about the changing relationship of design and business and is eager to meet the challenge. If her last runway collection is any indication, the collection should be full of drama and details, intricate construction and a lot of fun. Here are some of my favorite pieces from her FW08 line.

Other collections on the radar: Bee 23, a lower priced Bing Bang venture that will be sold at Urban Outfitters (surprising since Urban Outfitters has just been ripping off Bing Bang for years.) Erickson Beamon doing a line for Urban as well, though reportedly still very expensive. More on those later....
